PET RESCUE GROUPS...
INDISPENSABLE PARTNERS in the NO KILL EQUATION
Twenty years ago, a No Kill Community was a dream. Today it's a reality in areas nationwide and many communities, including Tucson, are working toward that goal. With the leadership of No Kill Pima County and other community stakeholders in collaboration with Pima Animal Care Center, lifesaving programs are being implemented and the number of lives saved is skyrocketing. But a sustainable transformation will only occur with significant community support of the No Kill Equation's 11 programs and services proven integral to success.
Rescue Groups are a key component. Animal transfers from a shelter to a rescue group makes space for intakes and reduces taxpayer costs for boarding and vet care. That's great news but the cost of care is transferred to an all-volunteer rescue community consumed with saving, rehabilitating, and adopting the animals. Most volunteers have full time jobs and there is little time to fundraiser to meet these exorbitant costs. In 2015, a single Tucson rescue group had $45,000 in vet expenses! Without vet services, animal rescue comes to a screeching halt.
In pet rescue, at the intersection of rehabilitating and rehoming these precious animals is financial support
from Tucson's animal lovers. Tucson, we have the means but do we have the will?
